Hon. Michael Falzon [01-2024]

Dr Michael Falzon was born on November 16, 1961 to Moses Falzon and Carmela nee’ Said, who originally hails from Gozo.

He was educated at St Albert the Great College in Sliema and Valletta. He then proceeded to do his Sixth Form studies and joined the Bank of Valletta in 1979 as a clerk. In 1985 Dr Falzon started reading Law at the University of Malta from where he graduated as a Notary in 1989 and as a Lawyer in 1991. He also continued with his banking studies obtaining the international qualification as an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, (ACIB). For a number of years he was the Executive Head of the Bank’s Legal Office.

Dr Michael Falzon served as the Election Manager of the Malta Labour Party’s Electoral Office from 1992 to 2003. There he had gathered around him and led a team of dedicated persons who ensured that the Labour Party was professionally organised, and that the electoral process was fair, transparent and smooth. This professionalism has earned him the respect of everyone nationwide, not only within the Labour Party camp, but also from the Nationalist Party and the Electoral Commission. He was also involved in discussions which led to the amendment of the Maltese Constitution in various instances.

He also served as the Labour Party’s International Secretary between 1998 and 2003. In this capacity he improved the Labour Party’s contacts with sister parties in Europe and the Mediterranean Region. Dr Falzon’s international work culminated in meetings with world leaders such as the UK’s Tony Blair; Italy’s Massimo D’Alema; Martin Schulz, the President of the Party of European Socialists within the European Parliament; and Australian Labour Leader and eventually Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

He contested the general election for the first time in March 2008 and was elected from the Second and Tenth District. He was also Deputy Leader for Party Affairs from March 2003 to June 2008. He was also a candidate in the 2013 and 2017 general elections in which latter election he was elected on both the Ninth and Tenth Districts, following which he was appointed Minister for the Family, Children’s Rights and Social Solidarity. He contested the general election in March 2022 and was elected on both the Ninth and Tenth Districts, following which he was appointed Minister for Social Policy and Children’s Rights.

Dr Michael Falzon also served as Parliamentary Secretary for Planning and Simplification from April 2014 to January 2016.

Dr Michael Falzon is married to Anna Maria nee’ Lia and they have two children, Martina and Nathaniel.
