Reference Number: PR201950en, Press Release Issue Date: Oct 10, 2020

The number of older persons in Malta is continuously increasing and this presents a number of challenges, such as the lack of workers, more efforts in health services, more funds for pensions and more calls for social services.

To this end, a public consultation webinar about the national political strategy for active ageing 2021-2027 was set up.

Several key players in the elderly sector took part in this webinar and there were also 4 different workshops. These were:

  • Employment
  • Participation in society
  • Independent, healthy and secure living in the community
  • Ensuring dignity, autonomy and empowerment in care homes and long-term facilities for older persons

During this webinar, Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing and Persons with Disability Silvio Parnis said that the government must ensure that the concept of active ageing guides the political work in this area. The aim is to pursue a policy that strengthens and improves inclusion and the quality of life of older persons in the community and in residential homes, and one that encourages and incentivizes increased participation by the elderly in our society. He concluded by stating that he looks forward to the report that the Commission for Active Ageing will be preparing in relation to this webinar and from which the active ageing strategy will be set up.
